Vision & Values

Sustaining over 100 years of pencil supply

California Cedar Products is the leader in providing innovative wood supply, product and marketing solutions and services to support the wood-cased pencil industry.  Our passion and commitment serve to assure a reliable, sustainable and growing role for pencils in the creative processes of artistic self-expression, education, and in written communication.

Our core purpose is to enable the mutual success of all those we work and interact with when it comes to their experience with our company and our products.  This starts with the forest land owner to our lumber suppliers; includes our employees and our industrial slat customers and the wholesale distributors and retail dealers who make sure great pencil products make it to the end-user.  Finally this includes the many consumers of pencils whether using one of the many world class brands of our pencil slat customers, our company’s pencil brands or buying these products from us on our Pencils.com store.  As a tool of self-expression and communication, whether you’re jotting notes at home or office, learning in school or creating art, music or literature we want you to have a fulfilling and rewarding experience.

The longevity of the Company is largely attributable to the vision, persistence and personal leadership of Charles P. Berolzheimer. From the 1927 acquisition of California Cedar Products Company until his death in 1995, Charles’ lifelong personal values were deeply instilled in the culture of the Company. Examples include his efforts to provide employees with a safe and intellectually stimulating work environment, and his commitment to a reliable supply of high quality products. But from where do such values spring? California Cedar Products’ achievement is also built upon the prior success and values of the Berolzheimer family and its business the Eagle Pencil Company, from the mid-nineteenth century forward. These relations and his other external experiences certainly influenced Charles’ character, know-how and thus, ultimately the Company. No proper accounting of this Company’s history can leave this earlier story untold. Similarly, California Cedar Products’ growth, development and diversification over 100 years could only have been accomplished through the many contributions of a much larger cast of characters; our dedicated and talented employees, continued leadership and commitment by subsequent generations of Berolzheimer family members, strong long term supplier relationships and, perhaps most notably, the loyal and continued patronage of customers around the world who have used California Cedar Products’ pencil slats in most of the leading brands of wood-cased pencils.

More recently, the addition of a growing number of Blackwing pencil enthusiasts and the dealers and distributors of Palomino branded products have contributed to a new round of growth and diversification. Thus, the story of California Cedar Products touches on the stories of all these people as well. The history of California Cedar Products is also a story of succession. Not just of the seven generations of Berolzheimer family members who have worked in the pencil industry, but also of the ongoing generations of employees, suppliers and customers with whom we’ve had the great honor and pleasure of working as a family. Notably, it’s a tale of the important role of two successive species of woods used for two hundred years in the pencil industry, first Eastern red cedar and today California incense-cedar. More recently it has also come to include the rise of new non-cedar species. It’s finally a story of a succession of the strategies of innovation and adaptation within the pencil industry supply chain that have enabled such endurance.
